Vulture Win

Politte and Webb

In 2005, The Sox Pennant and World Series year, White Sox players nicknamed Cliff Politte — The Vulture — and made vulture sounds after a Politte win. Pitching in middle to late relief, Cliff managed to win seven games. A Vulture Win is when a relief pitcher gets credit for a win with a minimum of effort — sometimes even after blowing a save chance. I don’t think there’s an official definition since it’s not really a stat. Anyway at last night’s game, Daniel Webb threw one pitch and got the win — a perfect Vulture Win.
