Ross & Robin

Red Sox catcher David Ross batting vs. the White Sox last night. Sox manager Robin Ventura is at the far right. This is significant because…

The night before, utility player Leury Garcia pitched an inning for the White Sox and took the loss. Position players sometimes take an inning late in the game of a blowout to save the relief staff, but it is rare for them to get a decision. According to the last night’s message board, Leury was the first Sox position player to get a decision since some guy in 1902 (he won). Robin Ventura used the entire bullpen, and Leury was the only position player left when he entered the game in the 14th inning. During Robin’s 16-year career in the majors, he pitched one inning (for the Dodgers in 2004) facing four batters and giving up only a walk. Last night, the Carmines’ catcher, David Ross, doubled in the winning run in the 9th inning. And, oddly enough, David was the Dodgers’ catcher for Robin’s one inning pitched.
