Adrian Nieto and Rule 5 Draft

Nieto and Class A Stats

In game-2, Sox catcher Adrian Nieto had his first major league at bat (he grounded out). He had entered the game earlier as a pinch runner following Paul Konerko’s pinch single. When Adrian came to the plate, the message board displayed his Class A stats from last year since he had never played above Class A. The Sox claimed Nieto from Washington in the Rule 5 Draft, which allows a team that has room on their 40-man roster to claim an unprotected minor league player from another team for $50K. But, to keep the player, the claiming team must keep him on their 25-man Active Roster for the entire season — or offer him back to the original team for $25K. Minor league players are protected from the draft based on various age and years under contract rules. MLB has a page explaining some details at  http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/minorleagues/rule_5.jsp?mc=faq
